Throughout 2025 we will be focusing on a different myth about refugees that we often hear on our market stall and taking a look at the truth behind the claims.
The first myth is something we hear all the time:
Why don’t refugees just come here legally / via a legal route?
The reason for this is that there are no legal routes. There is no legal way to travel to the UK for the specific purpose of seeking asylum.
Also, it is not possible to apply for asylum in the UK without being physically present here.
This means that most asylum seekers must come to the UK “illegally” to claim their right to asylum. The right to seek asylum is a legal entitlement that we rightly all share.
